Together we can make a difference

Lottery grant supports WW1 commemorations

Date: 24th February, 2014

Penrith’s programme of events to commemorate the First World War has received a boost thanks to a grant from Pride in Penrith Lottery.

Lottery chairman Rob Udale presented a grant for £1,500 to the Penrith Remembers 1914-1918 committee on Thursday 20 February.

“It’s fantastic to be able to support the committee with our first grant of 2014,” Rob said. “The group are planning a very varied series of events and activities throughout the year, which people in Penrith and further afield will be able to take part in.”

The Penrith Remembers committee represents a wide range of organisations and businesses who have come together to offer activities such as exhibitions, talks, plays, concerts, special church services and a town-centre parade, running from Easter until the end of the year.

“As well as commemorating the sacrifice that those from our area made during The Great War, we hope to bring out Penrith and Eden’s contribution to the war effort and the impact it had here,” said Ann Riseman, co-chair of the committee. “The programme includes something for people of all ages and viewpoints, and we want to leave a permanent legacy – not least by bringing together records and remembrances from the era. None of this would be possible without the support of bodies like Pride in Penrith Lottery, and we’re very grateful to them for their grant contribution.”

The lottery chairman added: “Penrith Remembers is a great example of the type of project that the lottery was set up to support, adding to the vibrancy of the town, bringing people together in a way that strengthens our community, while providing a lasting legacy, too.”

Pride in Penrith Lottery is set to make two more grant presentations in the coming weeks. Grant applications can be submitted year round, made possible by the generosity of lottery members’ subscriptions. Apply for one now!
